Regulations-based workshops to help healthcare organizations prepare for mandatory OCR HIPAA audits

Earlier this year the Office for Civil Rights announced that they have hired the U.S. audit, tax and advisory services firm KPMG to complete the initial round of 150 HITECH-mandated audits to assess compliance with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Final Rules and Breach Notification Rule. Compliance, privacy and security experts Clearwater Compliance are offering a series of workshops designed to help organizations prepare for these audits.

The initial round of 150 audits will be conducted between now and December 2012. While a positive step in ensuring that the privacy and security of patient data is maintained, many organizations are not compliant with the regulations, not ready for the audits and lack the skills and time to properly prepare.

“We have interviewed healthcare executives and compliance officers at organizations across the US to listen to their needs and determine how best we may help them prepare for an audit” says Bob Chaput, President of Clearwater Compliance. “The Clearwater HIPAA Audit Prep WorkShop™ series is designed to meet those needs and provide support, consulting and tools for organizations of all sizes.”

The workshop concept uniquely bundles software and tools which allows companies to more easily tackle their compliance through a step-by-step process that includes along with an intensive onsite/offsite engagement with a team of experts. This approach combines to create a powerful educational experience which can drastically reduce confusion and time spent dealing with compliance issues.

While the Clearwater Audit Prep WorkShop™ provides valuable support for the inherently complex issues involved in compliance, Mr. Chaput, who also offers free HIPAA compliance advice and news on succinctly boils down the biggest benefit of the new product as “delivering peace of mind to management and partners,” something which is difficult to put a price on, especially in the face of the severe financial and legal costs of a failed audit and likely follow on enforcement actions.
