This section of the HIPAA Security Final Rule includes those safeguards that are defined as the technology and the policy and procedures for its use that protect electronic protected health information and control access to it.

Technical safeguards refer to the technology and the policy and procedures for its use that protect electronic PHI and control access to it. There are five technical safeguards standards and these are:

  1. Access Control
  2. Audit Controls
  3. Integrity
  4. Person or Entity Authentication
  5. Transmission Security
